Dukes will host Camden County in 1st round of Region 19 tournament
VINELAND- The RCSJ-Cumberland baseball team has officially wrapped up the 2022 season. The Dukes now have their sights set on a Region 19 playoff run. After finishing the regular season with a 34-11 overall record, the Region 19 baseball committee decided Cumberland would receive the #2 seed in the tournament. Camden County College will travel to the Dukes baseball complex tomorrow (5/13) as the #7 overall seed. In the latest NJCAA, national rankings; Cumberland currently holds the #6 ranking in the country. The Cougars and Dukes met in the regular season for a 3-game set back in the middle of March. Cumberland came away victorious in all 3 games, completing a 3-game sweep.
Heading into this series, some of the standouts for Cumberland have been Kevin Merrone and Andrew Simone. Merrone is currently hitting .442 with 57 hits including 11 doubles, 6 triples, and 4 homeruns. He has been a steady piece for the offense and in the middle of the infield. Last week, Merrone was honored as the RCSJ-Cumberland team MVP by Head Coach Marco Carolla. On the mound, Andrew Simone has been the ace all year. The righty currently has a 3.86 ERA over a span of 63 innings pitched. This includes 82 strikeouts while only walking 17 batters. Simone was also recently honored by RCSJ-Cumberland. Simone was named the President's Male Scholar of the Year for the 2022 academic year. Both Merrone and Simone look to continue making big contributions during the playoff run.
First pitch between the Dukes and Cougars is scheduled for tomorrow, May 13th at 3:30PM. Day 2 of the series will be on May 14th, beginning at 12PM. All of the games vs. Camden County will be played at the Dukes Baseball Complex in Vineland, NJ.
