Dukes finish regular season schedule with series vs Brookdale
VINELAND- The RCSJ-Cumberland Dukes baseball team finished their regular season schedule with a series against the Brookdale community college Jersey Blues. The series would be won by the Jersey Blues as they took 2 of 3 from the Dukes. The first game of the series would be played in Lincroft, NJ. The Jersey Blues offense would get to the Dukes pitching early, and not let up. Brookdale won game 1 19-5. In game 2, The Dukes would play host for a double header at the Dukes Baseball Complex. THis contest would remain scoreless until the 4th inning before the Jersey Blues offense broke open the game with a 6-run 4th inning. They would follow that inning up with a 4-run 5th inning. The Dukes would try to get back in the game, but Brookdale would pull away with a 10-4 win.
The last game of the series was a 17-1 victory for the Dukes. Jacob Shapley threw all 7 innings on the mound while only giving up 1 earned run and racking up 13 strikeouts. Shapley improves to 8-1 on the season. Offensively James Hallman, Leggarius Johnson, Matt Shepherd and Jack Peacock all contributed 2 RBI's a piece. Also contributing in the 17-run performance was Casey Vaughan and Nathaniel Figuero. Figuero and Vaughan tallied 2 hits in game 3.
Cumberland finishes the season with a 34-11 overall record. In the latest NJCAA rankings, Cumberland received the 6th overall ranking. First round of the Region 19 tournament is scheduled to begin on May 12th through May 13th. Region 19 Final Four action is set to begin Friday, May 20th- May 22nd.
