Dukes Fall to Mercer, Snap 11 Game Win Streak
Cumberland stumbled on the defensive end in the final innings as the Dukes fell to Mercer County Community College 8-5. Cumberland allowed three runs in the top of the 8th inning, all scoring on errors, and could not fight back after leading 5-4 entering the eighth frame.
The Dukes started the scoring in the second inning. Justin Geri scored Dalton Mayberry on a high-chopping ground ball that went just off the glove of the Vikings third-baseman. The Dukes then added three more runs in the fourth. John Schoelkopf scored on another Geri single then a Tyler Mixon bloop single scored Geri and catcher Emil Zorrilla.
Mercer County narrowed the gap in the fifth scoring three runs on a solo homerun followed by a two-run shot from Joe Santospago. The visiting Vikings launched three homeruns in the game.
With the loss, Cumberland drops to 28-6 overall but the defeat will not affect the Dukes region record that currently sits at 14-3. They will look to rebound in a conference game at Camden County College on Thursday afternoon.
