Gill scores season-high 28 points in Duke win
VINELAND- After multiple heartbreaking, last second defeats; the Dukes have found themselves back in the win column. On Thursday night, the Dukes welcomed in reigning Region 19 Men's basketball Champions, the Community College of Philadelphia Lions. The Lions have gotten off to a slow start in 2022 as well, coming into this contest with a record of 2-5.
At the end of the 1st half, the two teams were tied at 34 points a piece. The 2nd half didn't provide much separation as both teams continued to go back and forth with the lead. With 45 seconds left in the game the Dukes would take a 1 point lead courtesy of a Colin Gill 3-point play (shooting foul). Community College of Philadelphia would again take the lead 72-71 with 20 seconds remaining. The game would come down to one more offensive possession for Cumberland. Gill would once again look to drive to the lane and give the Dukes the win. His shot attempt would be deflected and came up short. Angel Smith was able to corral the rebound and put up a layup that would give the Dukes the 73-72 lead and eventually the victory. Gill lead all scorers in the game with 28 points. Torey harris collected a double-double with 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds. Cumberland shot 54% from the field (27-50) and 79% from the free throw line (15-19).
The Dukes will have just one day off between games as the Sussex County College Skylanders come to Vineland, NJ to face the Dukes at 3PM on Saturday, December 3rd.
