Cumberland Soccer falls in RC Derby
GLASSBORO - The second annual RC Derby took place on September 28 as Mens Soccer traveled to RCSJ-Gloucester to defend the SJ Shield while Womens Soccer performed under the lights at the Rowan Soccer Complex on the campus of Rowan University.
Mens Soccer kicked off the early game of the RC Derby and performed admirably. Stout defense from Dom Guglielmi and Joseph Scaffo held the Roadrunners in check for most of the match while Manny Mertis and Christian Lewis provided support from the midfield. For the Dukes however, the Roadrunner offense proved too much for Cumberland to retain the SJ Shield as RCSJ-Gloucester came away with a 6-0 victory.
On the Womens side, the Dukes took on the #2 ranked team in the NJCAA National Polls and provided a glimpse as to what this program will be in the future. A wonderful service from Kelsey Andres led to a Kendra Stipes goal to increase her all-time career leading total 19 for an early 1-0 lead. The Roadrunners would knot the score at 1 late in the first half just before a weather delay halted play for nearly 90 minutes. Gloucester returned from the weather delay in high gear as they took a 3-1 lead into the half. The Dukes would threaten as Serena Colon put the Dukes within 2 after she was fouled in the 18-yard box. She would nail the penalty kick breathing life into the Dukes. The Roadrunners would tally one more goal to put the game out of reach for a 5-2 victory.
The RC Derby was created after the merger between Rowan College at Gloucester County and Cumberland County College. The series between the men is now tied at 1 and the Roadrunners lead the womens series at 2-0.
