It was the first game of the season for the women's basketball team. Just nine months removed from a disappointing 2-25 season, Cumberland looked to start of the new year the right way. In the mind of head coach James Boney, it was the beginning of new season. He had been preparing the team for this moment since practice was allowed to start on October 1st, but in his mind, he'll tell you he had been waiting for that first tip off since the second last season ended.
The Dukes did not disappoint. Sophomore Alicia Cox (Vineland) set the pace as the Dukes jumped out to an early 19-2 lead to start the game. From there, Cumberland never looked back and cruised to a 69-40 victory. Cox finished the game with 21 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists, and 7 steals. Sophomores Meghan McMahon, Tess Elder, and Shanence Howard added 7 points apiece, and freshman Mackenzie Wimberg scored 8 points in her NJCAA debut. Cumberland will host NJCAA Division II opponent Manor on Thursday November 8th at 8pm.
