Behind an outstanding performance from Sophomore captain AJ Gazzara and his supporting cast, the Dukes cruised to a 6-2 win in their opening game of the 2014 season over Delaware County Community College. Gazzara, an All-Region 19 selection from a year ago, gave the Phantoms defense trouble all afternoon, putting four balls into the back of the net after scoring ten total goals during the 2013 season.
Fellow Sophomore Miguel Hernandez and Freshman Jacob Cowan joined Gazzara in the scoring column with one goal apiece. Cowan, Gazzarra each assisted on a goal as six different Dukes recorded an assist on the afternoon. Freshmen Amandeep Singh, Brandon Alvarez, Ramon Soto and Tyler Obannon combined to add the four remaining assists.
The win was the first for Jody Roberts as the Head Coach of the Dukes. Roberts, who has been successful at other schools in the past, is off to a good start at Cumberland and will look to build on the encouraging. The Dukes will play their first home game of the season this Friday at 5PM against Hostos Community College.
