Bulldogs pull away from Cumberland with 3-point win
The RCSJ-Cumberland Dukes returned to the court this past weekend after a tough matchup vs #6 nationally ranked Brookdale Community College Jersey Blues. The Dukes would fall to Brookdale 95-62, but were eager to get back on the floor to compete against another Region 19 quality opponent.
Cumberland would welcome in the Bergen Community College Bulldogs, the Bulldogs were 1-1 coming into this matchup and were looking to leave South Jersey with a win. This contest would be all square in the 1st half. Both teams constantly exchanging baskets, with no team gathering more than a 6-point lead throughout the game. The 2nd half would be much of the same for these two teams as neither side could manage to pull away from each other. With 3 minutes remaining in the game, Bergen was able to able to jump ahead to a 5-point lead. Cumberland would manage to get it down to 88-87 in favor of the Bulldogs. Bergen would use foul shots to extend their lead and eventually defeat the Dukes by a score of 95-92.
Freshman Angel Smith recorded the first double-double of the season with 14 rebounds and 10 points. Leading scorer on the day was Ja'Maine Hawkins-Davenport with 26 points and not far behind him was teammate Jabril Bowman who had 22 points of his own. As a team, the Dukes would shoot 67.3% from the field; but the teams downfall would be their 1-10 effort from behind the arc. Cumberland falls to 1-2 on the year and will play again on Tuesday, November 15th when they host the Ocean County College Vikings at 6PM.
