The Cumberland Women's Basketball Program's pursuit of its first ever National Championship ended Friday night, as the #1 seeded Roxbury Community College Tigers handed the Dukes an 89-70 loss. This was the first loss for the Dukes in almost four months.
After the Dukes cut the Tigers lead to three with 5:34 left in the first half, #1 seeded Roxbury put together a 13-2 over the next four minutes and took a 40-28 lead into the break over the Dukes. At the 14:36 mark, fourth-seeded Cumberland narrowed the margin to 45-42, keyed by two three-point buckets from Jasmine Miro and a putback from Caroline Santiago.
Roxbury responded with a 12-3 run of their own to push their lead back to twelve. That was the story all night. Everytime the Dukes cut into the lead, the Tigers had an answer. Sahara Lopez scored 21 points and Jovan Childers chipped in with 17 in the losing effort. Roxbury was led by two 30-point scorers in Taj Lewis (32) and Ashley Stewart (30). Lewis and Stewart also recorded 34 rebounds between them.
The Dukes will have a shot at third place as they will play in a 6PM consolation game Saturday. Cumberland will play the loser of the Rock Valley and Mohawk Valley game.
