Sophomores Carly DiDonna and Gabrielle Castellini have been named NJCAA DIII Softball All-Americans. DiDonna was named to the First Team and Castellini earned second team honors. DiDonna and Castellini played a pivotal role on a team that broke all kinds of records over their two years in uniform with the Dukes.
DiDonna landed first-team honors in the Utility spot playing in all 52 games for the Dukes at three different positions. Due to injuries to key members of the starting lineup, Carly moved to Right-Field after starting the season at Third Base, and finished the season behind the plate. One thing that did not change throughout the 2016 season was DiDonna's position in the Cumberland batting order. Out of the lead-off spot, DiDonna hit .355, putting together 66 total hits, and crossing the plate 67 times - good for fourth best in the nation. Her seven total triples ranked fourth best and her 186 total at-bats was the second most of any NJCAA DIII hitter.
Contributing to those 67 runs scored by DiDonna was Cumberland's three-hole hitter and Center-Fielder Gabrielle Castellini. Castellini had a monster year at the plate, hitting .410 for the year and driving in a team-high 65 runs, ranking fourth among all DIII hitters. Of her 64 total hits, 40 of those were extra-base hits, second most in the nation. Diving deeper into the stat sheet, her eleven home runs were 4th most and her 27 doubles were the most of any hitter this year. Castellini logged 128 total bases, ranking her sixth in the nation. Her home run, double, and extra-base hit totals are the most in program history at Cumberland County College.
