After spending the previous four weeks ranked number two in the nation, Cumberland has jumped above perennial contender, Tyler Junior College (TX), and is now the number one ranked NJCAA Division III team in the country. The NJCAA released the latest rankings on Tuesday afternoon. The Dukes earned 5 victories on the week, not including an 8-0 victory over Camden County on Tuesday afternoon, which followed the release of the latest rankings. The victory over Camden County elevated Cumberland's record to 27-2. Despite the high praise, head coach Keith Gorman understands his team has bigger plans. "It's great to be recognized for all your hard work during the season," Gorman said. "However, I know our team is focused on the goal of a National Championship."
This is the fifth time in six years that the Dukes have claimed the top spot in the NJCAA national rankings, the first being in 2014 when the Dukes claimed their first Region XIX Championship en route to the NJCAA National Championship game against Tyler JC. Cumberland returns to action on Saturday, April 13 against the Vikings of Ocean County College. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM.
