It is with great sadness that the Cumberland County College Athletic Department announces the tragic passing of Devin McCann, a member of the Cumberland Baseball family during the 2013 and 2014 seasons. McCann passed away in an automobile accident early Sunday Morning near Brookhaven, Mississippi.
"Many days, we spend more time with our athletes than our own children. Devin was and is family. A Duke for life. We are all hurting badly." remarked Cumberland County College Director of Athletics and Head Baseball Coach Keith Gorman. "At this time, we ask for the prayers and thoughts of peace for his family, friends, and campus community as we deal with this tragic loss."
McCann was currently attending Belhaven University in Jackson MS, where he majored in sports administration. McCann was slated as the leading returner at catcher for the Blazers heading into his senior season.
Prior to Belhaven, Devin spent two years at Cumberland County College as a part of the 2013 and 2014 teams that jumpstarted the recent success for the baseball program.
"Devin was this coaching staff's first committed recruit. He opened the door for many other recruits. Devin loved Cumberland. I saw him all winter. He worked our baseball camp and then a few weeks ago stopped in to say goodbye at a home basketball game before he went back to school. "stated Gorman.
McCann played in 102 games with the Dukes, leading the 2014 team as a sophomore captain. In two seasons with the Dukes, McCann hit .325, totaling 109 total hits, 78 runs scored and 81 RBIs. Devin played a crucial role in bringing the first Region 19 Championship to Cumberland and a runner-up finish in the 2014 NJCAA College World Series.
Coach Gorman talked about the impact Devin had on the baseball program. "His toughness and intensity day in and day out set a standard in our program. He played the game with an edge and true enthusiasm that we would like to see in all our players. Devin was an outstanding teammate. Most talk about being a great teammate but Devin walked the walk. "
Devin, a Glenolden Pennsylvania native, was the beloved son of Dan and Renee McCann and a brother of two.
Information regarding the visitation and funeral service will be announced once it becomes available.
